Mount Isabel de Torres Cable Car

What it is

Mount Isabel de Torres is the 793 metre peak that rises straight up behind Puerto Plata, and the only aerial cable car in the Caribbean climbs it in about ten minutes. The summit is crowned by a fourteen metre statue of Christ the Redeemer, a smaller cousin of the Rio landmark, surrounded by a botanical garden and a panoramic terrace that takes in the whole amber coast, the cruise harbour and the patchwork of resorts along Playa Dorada. On a clear morning it is the best single viewpoint anywhere on the north shore.

How to visit

The cable car base station sits on the southern edge of the city, a ten minute drive from the centre. Cabins leave every fifteen to twenty minutes and the ride is included in the ticket. At the top you are free to wander the gardens, walk the loop trail past the Christ statue and stop at the cafe before riding back down. Plan for one and a half to two hours total. Many private city tours add the cable car as an optional stop, swapping it in for the rum or museum leg if you prefer the view.

Hours, prices and insider tips

The cable car runs daily from about 8.30 am to 5 pm, with the last cabin up around 4 pm, so it does not catch sunset. The round trip ticket costs roughly USD 13 to USD 20 for adults, less for children, and there can be a queue when two ships are in port. The clear advice is simple: go early. Morning haze burns off and the cloud often rolls over the summit by midday, so the 9 am cabins give the sharpest views. Bring a light layer because the breeze at the top is cooler than the coast.
